What is Envision?

Envision is intended to assist anyone with an interest in environmental data to access geographical data produced by the EPA. Much of the data you can view and query on Envision is also available to download either directly from Envision or from the Data Download option of the EPA GeoPortal.

Envision was developed for the EPA. Queries about Envision (or EPA GIS data in general) should be submitted using the Contact Us link to make sure they are dealt with promptly.

Envision Technical Details

Envision was developed using mainly JavaScript and HTML, however, some of the server components are .NET WCF. We have used

  • ESRI JavaScript API,
  • JQuery,
  • Dojo,
  • OpenLayers

JavaScript Libraries on the client side; and following products on the server side

  • RESTFul web services with WCF
  • ESRI ArcGIS Server,
  • MS SQL Server 2008 and Reporting Services,
  • GeoServer as WFS (OGC Web Feature Service) Server for Downloads,
  • GeoNetwork as CS/W (OGC Cataloue Service For the Web) Metadata Catalogue Server for ISO 19115 and INSPIRE Metadata.

We have tested the Envision and believe that it is fully compatible with the following browsers:

  • Internet Explorer 7+,
  • Firefox 3.5+,
  • Chrome,
  • Opera,
  • Safari 3+.

Envision can be used with older versions of Internet Explorer (IE 7 and IE 8) but there are some small limitations in the display when these versions are used.

Data Usage Policy

Data presented on EPA ENVision is provided "as is" without warranty of accuracy, timeliness or completeness. The burden of determining accuracy, completeness, timeliness and fitness or appropriateness for use rests solely with the user. The EPA makes no warranties, express or implied, as to the use of the data. There are no implied warranties or warranties of fitness for a particular purpose or merchantability, and the EPA shall have no liability for actual or consequential losses arising from use of the data. The user acknowledges and accepts the limitations of the data, including the fact that the data is dynamic and is in constant state of maintenance, correction and upgrade.

Reusing Envision Data

Some of the mapping images on this website are based on Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi) data. You are allowed to use such mapping images subject to the following terms and conditions.

OSi data is Copyright © Ordnance Survey Ireland and Government of Ireland protected by the Copyright Act 1963, Copyright (Amendment) Act 1987, Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000 and EU Copyright and Database Directives.

Other than as expressly set out in these terms and conditions you are not authorised to reproduce any OSi Data, whether the reproduction is direct or through a fresh drawing or from a map or document based on OSi material, whatever the means of reproduction. Any infringement of Ordnance Survey Ireland and Government of Ireland Copyright may lead to prosecution and/ or civil proceedings.

You are authorised to make a single printed copy of each OSi mapping image as displayed on your browser for personal, non-commercial use. Educational establishments may print sufficient copies of each map image as displayed on your browser to provide each pupil/ student and teacher with an individual copy. You must not use the prints for financial gain. All hard copies produced from OSi data must carry the following acknowledgement:

Data that is produced directly by the EPA is free for use. We do ask that you acknowledge the EPA source in any reuse or publication. We also ask that you notify us of any errors or omissions you may identify in the data so that we can correct same. EPA data can be downloaded directly via Envision using the Data Download option, or can be downloaded using the Data Download option of the EPA GeoPortal.

Data sources

The EPA ENVision mapping viewer has been provided to enable visitors visualise environmental data and is intended as a tool for the personal investigation of environmental issues. Data portrayed on the viewer has been provided by a number of sources

  • Environmental Protection Agency
  • Geological Survey of Ireland
  • Teagasc
  • National Parks and Wildlife Service


The EPA does not guarantee the accuracy of data presented on this viewer and is not responsible for incorrect interpretation. If accuracy is important, it is recommended that you obtain a copy of the original maps on which the information is based and verify its accuracy.

National Soils Database

The soils classification data associated with spatial points on the map cannot be used at a local scale, as this information is derived form a scale of 1:575,000 generalised soil map of Ireland and therefore should be used with caution when describing point or small scale data.
