Statement
The EU Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) establishes a framework for the protection, improvement and management of surface and ground waters. The overall aim for surface waters, which include transitional waters (estuaries and lagoons), is to achieve at least good ecological status and good chemical status by 2015 as well as preventing deterioration in those waters that have been classified as high or good. This is the interim classification of transitional waters.
