Biological Q Stations

Biological Q Stations are a network of river monitoing stations throughout Ireland where river monitoring takes place on a 3 year cycle.

The river samples are analysed and an overall river quality value (Q-Value) is assigned to each river station. Ireland has a very large network of Monitoring Stations, of which, rivers stations are the most comprehensive.

Under the remit of EU Water Framework Directive (WFD), Directive 2000/60/EC, the WFD Monitoring Programme's objective is to prevent any further deterioration in status of surface waters, ground water and water dependant ecosystems and to restore polluted water bodies to at least "good status" by 2015.

What is in the download?

Files are presented as zipped ESRI Shapefiles.

  • • Mon_QStations.shp;
  • • ReadMe.txt;
  • • River Water Quality.lyr.

The Mon_QStations.shp is an ESRI Shapefile (point data). This dataset contains 9499 river station points.

The ReadMe.txt offers instruction as how the maximise the use of this dataset by joining it to he Biological Q Results data, also available for download.

The River Water Quality.lyr is a symbology file, which you can use to obrtain the same River Water Quality categories as is shown on EPA MAPS.

To maximise the benefit of this dataset please download the Biological Q Results data.
Now join the Mon_QResults table to the Biological Q Stations dataset based on 'EPALink' field in Mon_QStations and 'StationID' in Mon_QRecords.xls.
