WFD Register of Protected Areas - Groundwater bodies for Drinking Water (WFD RBMP Cycle 3)

All Water Framework Directive (WFD) Groundwater bodies have been identified as Drinking Water Protected Areas due to the potential for qualifying abstractions of water for human consumption as defined under Article 7 of the WFD. The groundwater drinking water protected areas (DWPA) are represented by the full extent of each WFD groundwater body.

Statement

This dataset represents a snapshot taken in December 2018 for the purpose of the WFD RBMP Cycle 3.

The legislation governing the quality of drinking water is set out in the European Communities (Drinking Water) (No. 2) Regulations 2007 (SI no. 278/2007). The actual protected areas for drinking waters are not outlined within the Regulations, as a result, the protected area for drinking waters is represented by the water body from which the water is abstracted and the associated drinking water abstraction point. During 2004-2005 and again in 2008-2009 a register of drinking water abstractions was collected from Local Authorities. This abstractions list was used to identify water bodies that are sources for drinking water. The entire water body is to be used to represent the protected area (groundwater body, lake or river).Where water is abstracted from a river or lake that was not initially selected as a water body (i.e. 1st or2nd order rivers or lakes smaller than 50 hectares) the water is then designated as a protected area and the1st or 2nd order stream or small lake is reclassified as a waterbody. Spatial Accuracy: all protected water bodies are extracted from the existing WFD water body layers: spatial accurracy of each of the water body types (river, lake or groundwater) is described in the metadata for that layer. Thematic Accuracy: Drinking water scheme and abstraction point codes are those used locally at the Local Authority level. Protected area codes are unique incremental numbers. Currency: Abstractions data was collected in 2004 and updated in 2009. Logical Consistency: The dataset meets the topological requirements set out in Guidance Document number 22: Support for Reporting of RBMP, Guidance on reporting of spatial data.
